Rhode Island Mistakenly Sends Tax Refund Checks Signed by Mickey Mouse and Walt Disney

August 3, 2020

It’s the most magical check in the world — by accident.

The State of Rhode Island mistakenly issued tax refund checks that were signed by Walt Disney and Mickey Mouse, reports CNN.

The erroneous signatures were included on 176 checks that went out to taxpayers on Monday.

The gaffe was a misprint resulting from a glitch that pulled the signatures from the Division of Taxation's test print files, according to Jade Borgeson, chief of staff for the state's Department of Revenue.

The signatures that should have been included on the checks were those of Seth Magaziner, the state treasurer, and Peter Keenan, state controller.

According to Borgeson, most of the misprinted checks were corporate tax refunds.

The division is working to fix the issue. Since they went out, the checks have been voided, with new, corrected versions set to go out to taxpayers within a week.

"The division is continuing to proactively contact impacted taxpayers to remedy the error, and apologizes for any inconvenience the error may have caused," Borgeson said.
