Annette's Picks: Weekend Guide for Oct 5th - 7th

October 3, 2018

Fall festival season is really here! School fairs are happening and yet for some reason we're still talking about temps in the 90's. (sigh) But since it's still the best city in the entire world, let's get out there and enjoy it! Here are just SOME of the events I thought you might want to know about for the weekend of October 5-7, 2018.

Oktoberfest and the Oktoberfest Run/Walk - Oktoberfest kicks off this weekend at the Deutsches Haus' new location right along Bayou St John across from City Park. The fest starts at 4pm on Friday and the run/walk is just 2 miles, so good for almost everyone, on Saturday morning. Oktoberfest activities run the first 3 weekends during October.

Celebracion Latina at the Zoo - My kids are in a Spanish immersion program at their elementary school so I'm really excited to let them see a little more of the culture while also hitting one of their favorite places, the zoo! It's Sunday, 10/7 only from 10am-5pm. Performances, activities, authentic cuisine for sale. Event included with zoo admission or membership.

Scout Island Scream Park opens - It's like a haunted house took over an entire island. There are different areas (most included with your general admission tickets) and a few specialty areas. Most of these are too scary for me and my kids, but they have a scare-free KidZone, carnival rides, dance areas and more. Open all through October, tickets start at $15, but $5 off with Coke can/bottle.

Fall Garden Festival - I have no green thumbs, but those who do might want to check out the 22nd anniversary of the festival at City Park. There is a children's area and it's got info, plants and entertainment for all levels of gardening experience. Even just those of us who only like to look at them. $10 for adults and $5 for ages 5-12 at the Botanical Garden both Sat and Sun.

Beignet Fest - Sweet and savory beignets are the headliners, but I'm planning to take my kids to see the Imagination Movers start off the day on Sat (the only fest day). Additional performers and activities. Free admission, VIP available, City Park Festival Grounds.

Gleason Classic - Anything that supports Team Gleason is ok with me even if it means exercising. :) It's the "World's Longest 5K" plus yoga and Twerk-Out with Big Freedia on Sat at Team Gleason House at St Margart's in Mid-City. Get an early start since things get going at 6:30am, $55 day-of registration.

Que Pasa Fest - Over 4 days at Lafreniere Park, the fest celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month. Lots of performances and lots of great food available. Admission is free.

Aladdin the Musical at the Saenger - Based on the Disney movie, this will be a fun one for the family. It opened a few days ago and runs through Sunday 10/7.

Algiers Fest - Celebrating the military and our community is the tagline for this festival on General Meyer in Algiers. It's free admission and includes lots of performances including the Marine Corps Band to start off the day. Saturday 10/6

Muffuletta Festival - Metairie's most famous stop for the muffuletta jhosts the event honoring our beloved sandwich. The event itself is free, but the VIP can go all the way up to $100. That's a lot of sandwiches worth of VIP. Sunday 10/7

If you'd rather just stay inside to avoid the rain and heat, don't forget that Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper's version of A Star Is Born opens this weekend.

Have a great weekend!
